Summary
When I first started as the CEO of Cordia, I had a meeting with Rob Thornton, President, and CEO of the International District Energy Association (IDEA). During our conversation, Rob shared a historical perspective on district energy systems, tracing their origins back to the Roman Empire.
One of the earliest known forms of district heating can be traced back to the Roman Empire. The Romans developed hypocaust systems to heat public baths and buildings. These systems used a central furnace to heat air, which was then distributed through a network of ducts beneath the floors, providing warmth to large structures. This method of centralized heating was remarkably advanced for its time and laid the groundwork for future innovations in district energy.
Fast forward 2,000 years, and we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in the energy sector. The ancient Romans' idea of centralized heating has evolved into sophisticated district energy systems. Today, we can take what the Romans started and optimize it for our modern energy landscape using artificial intelligence (AI). The integration of AI into district energy systems holds tremendous potential to revolutionize the way we manage and distribute energy.
