Congressman Sean Casten (D, IL-6) delivered an informative and inspirational keynote address at the 2024 CHP Summit in Alexandria VA on September 25.   His remarks covered the intent and magnitude of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) as a catalyst for investment and innovation in the clean energy economy that America needs if we are to compete for the future and “bend the curve” on carbon emissions to tackle the challenges of global climate change.

Drawing from decades of experience in the CHP industry, Congressman Casten is particularly prescient in relating how district energy/CHP providers can leverage IRA legislation to drive investment and accelerate the energy transition. Sean Casten is a former chair of the USCHPA and CEO of Turbosteam and Recycled Energy Development (RED).  He currently serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Science, Space and Technology Committee and is Vice-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s Climate Change Task Force and Vice-Chair of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.

Additionally, the CHP Alliance was pleased and proud to present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Thomas Casten, Sean’s father, for his 50 years of dedicated commitment to energy efficiency through deployment of CHP, district energy and energy recovery systems to reduce global carbon emissions.

IDEA President & CEO, Rob Thornton (L) presented Tom Casten (R)
with a copy of the IDHCA magazine from his term as Chair of the Association.

Tom Casten was founder and chairman of Trigen Energy Corporation, which owned and operated district energy systems across the US, (a predecessor to today’s Vicinity Energy portfolio).  Tom also served as chair of the International District Energy Association in 1992-93 and was recognized with the IDEA Norm Taylor Award in 1989.
