Summary
Council will expand existing project partnership to create a new network to provide a wider number of homes and building with heat generated from waste
Veolia will develop a new district heating network in London in partnership with Southwark Council.
The network will provide nearly 5,000 homes with low-carbon heat sourced from waste. The project will deliver heat through Veolia’s SELCHP (South East London Combined Heat and Power) Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), which uses energy generated from non-recyclable waste to meet the heating demands of residential and public buildings.
The new system is expected to supply 75GWh of low-carbon heat per year to 4,700 homes that are based across 11 social housing estates. It will also supply local schools. The energy used in the heat network will contain approximately 60 per cent renewable content through a focus on biogenic treated waste from sources such as plant matter.
