Summary

The UK Government has announced the first heat network zones in England, which aim to support businesses and building owners in the transition to low carbon heating.

It has selected six towns and cities for the zones, including Leeds, Plymouth, Bristol, Stockport, Sheffield, as well as two in London. The areas will receive a share of £5.8 million of government funding to develop the zones, with construction expected to start from 2026.

The scheme aims to create tens of thousands of jobs including engineering, planning, manufacturing and construction roles.

It believes that delivering such zones in urban areas is the “cheapest and most efficient way of delivering the technology”, which recycles excess heat generated by locations such as data centres or factories to heat several buildings at once.
