Summary

Poland needs to fundamentally transform its energy system, towards one based on renewables and nuclear power. How much does the energy technology choice matter?

What role could district heating play in reducing emissions from Poland's energy and buildings?

Poland has one of the biggest district heating systems in Europe, which, unfortunately, is still largely based on coal.

In the last 20 years, the emissions in that sector have been reduced by 20 per cent, and that has been possible due to the introduction of more efficient technologies and a shift to less carbon-intensive energy sources, including renewable energy sources and high-efficiency cogeneration.

The plan is to do more of it, including electrifying district heating by using green electricity and to combine it with heat storage systems. The problem – as always – is how to finance it without passing on large costs to end end-consumers.
