Energie AG plans to repurpose sections of its natural gas network in Upper Austria for hydrogen transport, with an initial focus on a pipeline between Linz and Sattledt.
Austrian utility Energie AG Oberoesterreich has announced its intention to establish a pilot hydrogen network by repurposing existing natural gas infrastructure. The initiative is designed to integrate hydrogen, a cornerstone of renewable energy strategies, into the region's energy framework.
Netz Oberoesterreich plans to develop the Linz-Sattledt pipeline into a dual-use system. One strand will continue transporting natural gas, while the other will handle hydrogen. The hydrogen-specific pipeline, with a 40-centimeter diameter, is expected to transport up to 50,000 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour, equivalent to 170 MW, roughly the capacity of Linz’s district heating power plant.
