Trinity Health says it’s spending $18 million to build a combined heat and power plant at its downtown Grand Rapids campus.
The new plant, under construction now, will produce steam and a portion of Trinity’s electricity, according to a release. Once operational, the plant is expected to save Trinity Health $2.5 million annually and cut the carbon footprint of the campus by an estimated 26%.
“In the future, with our own CHP (combined heat and power plant), we’ll produce some of our own electricity on campus and use the heat generated from that process to make the cleanest steam possible,” said Zach McIntosh, director of plant operation at Trinity Health Grand Rapids.
