Healey eyes $2.5 billion for public campus maintenance

Adding on money needed to modernize buildings and meet state goals for limiting fossil fuel emissions, the campus would need another nearly $750 million over a decade above current funding levels.

Governor Maura Healey on Tuesday laid out a plan to create a new funding stream for higher education building projects through a bond bill that would authorize spending $2.5 billion over 10 years. The plan is badly needed. According to Adam Baacke, commissioner of the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, construction on Massachusetts’ public colleges and universities peaked in the 1960s and 1970s, as baby boomers were enrolling in college. That means many building features — roofs, electrical systems, and other infrastructure — are 50 years old and reaching the end of their lifespan.
