Summary

In the coming weeks, Fortum will start implementing a project to decarbonize the combined heat and power CHP plant in Częstochowa. The Finnish owner of the CHP has signed contracts with three key contractors: Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW), Mostostal Warszawa and Bilfinger Tebodin. The decarbonization project is worth around 100 million euros in total, and this is one of the largest investments in green heat and energy in the region.

SFW will modernise the boiler at the plant, converting the boiler’s fuel mix from 70 per cent coal and 30 per cent biomass to 100 per cent biomass. The plant will use certified wood biomass, consisting of 90 per cent wood chips from sawmills and 10 per cent wood chips of agricultural origin. The plant will use 350,000 tons of certified biomass annually, sourced from the domestic market in Poland.
