Power Engineering
Summary
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announced that it will award up to $43 million in Microgrid Incentive Program (MIP) grant funding to support the development of nine community-driven microgrids across Northern and Central California.
PG&E selected nine microgrid projects out of 22 advanced applications. These microgrids aim to enhance energy resilience in disadvantaged communities that are particularly vulnerable to power outages.
The microgrids are designed to support essential community resources, such as hospitals, fire stations, schools and telecommunications facilities. They will be powered by a variety of energy solutions, including solar, battery storage, pumped hydroelectric storage, small hydro and biomass. Four of the microgrids will directly serve tribal communities.
Of the $43 million awarded, approximately $34 million will be allocated for front-of-the-meter energy generation resources, battery storage, engineering and project management costs, and land acquisition or leasing. Each selected project will also receive up to $1 million for interconnection costs, ensuring the seamless integration of distributed energy resources into the grid.
