Over 2,600 data centers have already been built in the United States with hundreds more in the works. Minnesota is home to 25 of those centers; Meta, Microsoft and Amazon would like to build others soon in communities like Rosemount and Becker County.
The data center debate is a lively one, with bipartisan support and opposition on all fronts, from environmental impacts to economic development and tax policy. According to a 2024 U.S. Department of Energy report, electricity consumption by data centers is expected to double by the end of the decade. It is important that we hold data centers to our state’s clean energy goals so that advances in these technologies do not send us backward into fossil fuel consumption. Yes, we need the capabilities, economic development and jobs that data centers will create, but we also need to stay true to our goals for a carbon-free future.
