Summary
According to Natural Resources Canada, the 2023 wildfire season was a historic one. There were 6,623 wildland fires that year, which is less than the average of about 8,000 that normally occur annually.
But what if we could slow down the spread of some of these massive wildfires by reducing the fuel load on the forest floor? This isn’t a new strategy. A few municipalities in northern B.C. that are located in areas sensitive to wildfires have already started up initiatives where they remove biomass from the forest floor and use it as fuel in district heating systems.
