Summary
A former coal-fired power station in central Helsinki will soon house a full-scale pilot facility for a Finnish-designed small modular reactor, under a new agreement between clean energy developer Steady Energy and municipal energy company Helen.
The pilot will showcase the LDR-50 reactor developed by Steady Energy, a company spun out from Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre in 2023. With a thermal output of 50 MW, the LDR-50 is designed specifically for district heating. The version to be installed in Helsinki will generate about 6 MW of thermal energy to feed into Helen’s district heating network.
“This is the first time a reactor module of this type will be tested physically at full scale,” said Antti Teräsvirta, project manager at Steady Energy. “The goal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the reactor’s core passive safety system.”
