Halton Hills Today
Summary
With the Vision Georgetown development, Halton Hills is about to grow by close to 20,000 new residents. At Halton Hills Climate Action, we would love to see the Town continue to show leadership and progress in making our new neighbourhoods low-carbon and both environmentally and financially sustainable
What is a district energy system? Traditionally, it's a system of pipes connecting a neighbourhood, or cluster of buildings, to a centralized facility that provides heating and cooling services. These systems are not new; just think of a large hospital or university campus with central boilers and chillers providing heating and cooling to all the buildings. This type of set-up can be much more fuel- and cost-efficient compared to having smaller boilers/chillers in each of the buildings. So even if powered by fossil fuels, they can represent lower overall GHG emissions, and costs.
But here is where things are getting really interesting: what if the energy sources for these systems didn't have to be fossil fuels? Here are a few of the many projects currently underway in Ontario:
But here is where things are getting really interesting: what if the energy sources for these systems didn't have to be fossil fuels? Here are a few of the many projects currently underway in Ontario:
- New condominium buildings near the Mount Pleasant GO station in Brampton will have shared geothermal district energy systems as part of the MPV2 Low Carbon Community
- The City of Markham is working with Enwave and Mattamy Homes to provide geothermal district energy to the new Springwater residential community
- The Region of Peel is working with Enwave and the City of Mississauga to provide district energy to the new Lakeview Village community, in part by recovering waste heat from treated wastewater from the nearby G.E. Booth Water Resource Recovery Facility
- The West 5 and Eve Park developments in London, Ontario are creating solar-powered communities that store and share power to run heat pumps.
