CEE Energy News
Summary
Poland is one of the most active countries in the geothermal district heating and cooling (DHC) project in Europe, with 72 projects under development, according to the European Geothermal Energy Council’s (EGEC) latest data.
“Poland is still at the beginning of a wider geothermal energy exploitation for various purposes, especially for heating, like district heating,” said Beata Kępińska. Compared to other countries in the region, Germany, Hungary, for example, have a bigger geothermal share in their renewable energy mix.
Poland is working strongly on the phase-out of coal and is partially betting on renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy is expected to play a significant role, mainly in district heating. The Geothermal Road Map, published in 2022, envisages about 50 such systems by 2040. Major municipalities such as Łódź and Poznań have recently launched projects. These cities are building systems of around 100 MW each.
