Tokyo Fires Up Nation’s First Hydrogen-Fueled District Heating Boiler

On July 18, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government officially began operating Japan’s first hydrogen co-firing boiler for district heating. Located at the Aomi Minami Plant of Tokyo Rinkai Heat Supply Co., Ltd. in Koto Ward’s waterfront subcenter, the system blends green hydrogen with city gas to supply heating and hot water.

 

The hydrogen is sourced from the Yonekurayama green hydrogen project in Kofu City, underscoring Tokyo’s broader commitment to pioneering decarbonization technologies under the "Waterfront New City Carbon Neutral Strategy."

This groundbreaking initiative is part of a joint research project involving the Port and Harbor Bureau, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimizu Corporation, boiler manufacturer Hirakawa, Tokyo Teleport Center, and Tokyo Rinkai Heat Supply.
