CE Energy News
Summary
Cities in Europe are starting to explore the potential of geothermal energy, with exploratory drilling underway, for example, in Germany (Munich, Berlin, Hannover, Hamburg, etc.), in Poland, in Slovenia and Croatia, while Hungary has released a major support scheme to encourage development.
Vienna could be among the first cities to introduce geothermal district heating in its neighbourhoods. At the end of last year, the joint venture of OMV and Wien Energie, deeep, has started drilling the country’s first deep geothermal plant.
Deeep is also planning further projects, some with even greater capacity. The goal is to have around 120 megawatts of geothermal energy in operation by 2030. The potential they see in the surrounding area, and in integrating it into the district heating network, amounts to about 200 megawatts. “We focus on using geothermal energy for district heating, as our sources provide temperatures that make this application highly efficient,” explains Mr Wallisch, adding that the development of geothermal district heating is further urged by Vienna’s climate law, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
