Summary
For three hours Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) led an event that challenged area leaders to think big about investing in geothermal technology.
The congressman said she views it as a way of guarding against rising electricity costs and, thus, help to protect natural resources such as Lake Erie.
Geothermal is a type of renewable energy in which largely underutilized heat from beneath the Earth’s surface is extracted. Some wells are more than a mile deep.
Steam or super-hot liquids, much of it water, can be used to more affordably generate electricity.
It also can be used to cut costs for heating and cooling large buildings and industrial sites, such as those found on college campuses.
