Summary
Ministerial offices and homes in Westminster could be heated using burning rubbish under plans being considered by Ed Miliband.
The company behind an incinerator in east London has cleared a key hurdle in the planning process to introduce a scheme that would use waste to heat up vast amounts of water to be pumped around government departments and office blocks.
Cory Group plans to use industrial waste heat from its Riverside 1 incinerator, with a second plant under construction on the site due to be added to the scheme next year. After being heated, the water would then be delivered up the River Thames in giant barges before being hooked up to a district heating scheme.
