Summary
Aalborg East has the potential to become one of Europe's first urban districts that produces more energy annually than it consumes, according to a new report from Aalborg University. The biggest challenge is that the district cannot yet produce enough renewable electricity on its own.
Researchers from Aalborg University have mapped out the possibilities for transforming Aalborg East into a Positive Energy District (PED). In a PED, energy consumption must be based entirely on renewable energy, and the district as a whole should produce more energy over the course of a year than it uses.
The key points of the strategy are:
- 30% reduction in heat consumption
- Individual heat pumps
- Heat pump integrated into the district heating system
- Thermal storage in the district heating system
