Portland Foreside developers plan CHP system

Developers of the $1 billion Portland Foreside complex in the city's East End plan to generate their own power and heat with gas-fired generators without connecting to the regional electric grid.

The combined heat and power facility "has been designed to provide safe and reliable electricity and thermal energy without any interconnection to [Centra Maine Power's] CMP’s distribution or transmission networks," the developer said in the filing.

Heat from generation will be captured and used for space and water heating, according to the company. It said it has backup systems in case of emergencies or unexpected interruptions, according to the filing.
