A large dairy plant in Burnaby is being deconstructed, and its demolition materials are being repurposed for new projects that potentially include a regional energy centre.

The closure and demolition of the 215,000-square-foot Saputo Inc. dairy plant at 6800 Lougheed Highway comes a long time since the days when Burnaby residents could get fresh Dairyland milk delivered to their doorstep.

Peterson Group Properties (Canada) Inc. is developing a master-planned community on the site. But in the meantime some of the demolition materials are being salvaged and given a new life, with potential destinations including a $200-million district energy system built by the Metro Vancouver Regional District.
