Penn State University
Mechanical Engineer (Chilled Water & Hot Water Systems)
Penn State is seeking a Mechanical or Hydronics Operations Engineer to support the reliable, efficient operation of campus chilled water and heating hot water systems, distribution loops, plant equipment, and building-level hydronic systems. This role applies established hydronic/hydraulic principles to evaluate system performance, troubleshoot operational issues, and improve long-term reliability and efficiency. The position supports Penn State’s long-range initiative to expand interconnected chilled and hot water loops across University Park.
Key Responsibilities
• Evaluate and optimize chilled water and heating hot water system performance (flow, pressure, heat transfer) across utility and building systems.
• Develop and maintain preventative maintenance programs for hydronic assets (pumps, valves, strainers, piping, plate-and-frame heat exchangers, coils, and building-level equipment).
• Manage and support projects such as feasibility studies, system assessments, and budget development.
• Review drawings, specifications, and calculations for distribution systems, pumping systems, heat exchangers, and associated mechanical equipment.
• Support planning for loop expansions, conversions, and development of district hot water plants.
• Conduct field verifications, collect performance data, and help develop documentation, operating strategies, and maintenance standards.
• Provide technical support for stand-alone chillers, building heating hot water systems, air handling units, and hydronic control strategies.
• Collaborate with operations teams, consultants, manufacturers, and design professionals to ensure systems are designed and operated for long-term efficiency and maintainability.
• Support the campus water treatment program by collaborating with water analysts and the water treatment service provider.
• Provide training, workshops, and technical resources for operations and maintenance staff; utilize and maintain a campus chilled/hot water model.
• Work closely with technicians to optimize control system performance; review maintenance plans and support corrective repairs.
• May supervise staff, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
