Director of Campus Facilities – Energy Management
Energy Management oversees the University of Missouri’s district energy combined heat and power (CHP) system, delivering reliable utility services to more than 16 million square feet of academic, research, healthcare, residential, athletic, dining, and administrative facilities. Core systems include steam, electricity, chilled and domestic water, storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure, building automation and controls, HVAC commissioning, and utility coordination for off-campus facilities.
At the center of these operations is MU’s Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power Plant (CCHP), which produces steam, chilled water, and electricity to support efficient, resilient campus operations. The department also manages more than 100 miles of underground utility distribution infrastructure supporting the University’s academic and research mission.
The Director of Campus Facilities – Energy Management provides executive leadership for the planning, financial management, operation, maintenance, engineering, expansion, and personnel oversight of the Energy Management department within Campus Facilities.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the operation, maintenance, construction, engineering, and expansion of campus utility systems and supporting infrastructure.
• Administer and manage an annual utilities budget of $150–$160 million, including financial reporting and cost tracking.
• Direct utilities process control, building automation systems, and recharge operations such as insulation services, controls/automation, testing, balancing, and commissioning.
• Oversee utility mapping, GIS/GPS data services, metering accuracy, and centralized compressed air systems.
• Procure and manage natural gas supply contracts and purchased utilities for campus entities including MU Health Care, Athletics, and auxiliaries.
• Develop cost-reduction and resiliency strategies through fuel sourcing, natural gas hedging, wholesale electricity procurement, and renewable energy agreements.
• Ensure environmental compliance, safety programs, and regulatory reporting.
• Lead campus-wide energy efficiency and conservation initiatives.
• Provide strategic planning through 5–10 year capital improvement plans, long-range utility master plans, and infrastructure extension planning.
• Coordinate utility operations and long-range planning with external partners and regional utilities.
• Recruit, develop, and lead professional, managerial, technical, and administrative staff.
• Support campus engagement through consultation, collaboration, facility tours, and academic outreach.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering
• At least 5 years of experience directing utility services in a similar setting and scale, or at least 10 years of experience in utility-related supervision and management.
Salary Range
$150,000 – $201,032 annually, with a comprehensive University of Missouri benefits package.
