Now zoom all the way out to the scale of a whole city, and you find the most efficient idea of all—one that treats cooling not as a thousand private appliances but as a shared utility, like water or gas.

District cooling works exactly like that. A single, hyper-efficient central plant chills water and pumps it through insulated underground pipes to hundreds of buildings at once. No rooftop condensers, no thousand individual units each blasting hot exhaust into the street. The efficiency gains are staggering: up to a 50 percent cut in electricity, 90 percent lower refrigerant emissions, and a serious dent in the "urban heat island" effect that turns cities into cauldrons. The global market is set to roughly double from about $30 billion in 2024 to $55 billion by 2033.

The showcases are already running. In Paris, the Fraîcheur de Paris network—one of the world's largest—snakes 110 kilometers under the city, cooling everything from the Louvre to office towers. It runs on 100 percent renewable electricity and, in a beautifully simple move, pulls naturally cold water from the Seine in winter to help chill things, cutting its CO₂ emissions nearly in half.
