A large underground section of Miami University’s unusual heating and cooling system was recently activated in time for this month’s start of the fall semester.
Miami officials said the hundreds of water-filled pipe line wells — buried 850 feet next to Millett Hall — will help the university save on HVAC costs well into the future as well as reduce the school’s energy carbon emissions.
Nearby, work to convert the former Billings Hall into Miami’s second geothermal plant was completed this summer, adding to the school’s already extensive underground HVAC system that uses the constant, under-earth temperature to reduce costs in heating and cooling water piped to dozens of campus buildings.
