Summary

On Wednesday, December 6, the Standard for the Specification of Microgrid Controllers (P2030.7) was approved as a new standard by the IEEE-SA Standards Board.

Microgrids are gaining attention due to their advantages for integrating various types of distributed energy resources (DER), including CHP, renewable energy resources (such as solar and wind), energy storage, as well as providing load management, resiliency, and demand response. A key element to the functionality of microgrids is the control system that manages the various DERs and loads.

“Standards are a key enabler to the deployment of microgrids, and the associated Distributed Energy Resources (DER) within them” says Jim Reilly of Reilly Associates and Secretary, IEEE 2030.7 Working Group.

There are numerous benefits of implementing a standard for microgrid controllers. When implemented, these standards can facilitate the deployment and adoption of microgrid concepts by the utility industry, they can reduce system integration costs, help resolve in-the-field interoperability issues to reduce time to deployment, and lower technical barriers to advanced applications for microgrids.

The Standard for the Specification of Microgrid Controllers (P2030.7) focuses on defining core functions of microgrids with verifiable and quantifiable performance. “The reason for establishing a standard for the Microgrid Energy Management System (MEMS) is to enable interoperability of the different controllers and components needed to operate the MEMS through cohesive and platform-independent interfaces. This approach will allow for flexibility and customization of components and control algorithms to be deployed without sacrificing or limiting potential functionality.”

The second standard in the 2030 series, IEEE P2030.8 – Standard for the Testing of Microgrid Controllers is currently in the balloting process with IEEE, and is expected to close in January 2018.
