UT Austin is the largest microgrid in the US, providing all the energy and wet utilities to the campus. While microgrid functions already in place, definite issues existed with the legacy systems that has been in place at the plant for 20 years. The multiple control platforms that composed the SCADA system were outdated and non-compatible, these multiple aged platforms were increasing problems for both maintenance and operations. This led to the decision to upgrade the very complex microgrid system using a phased approach so as not to impact the campus in a negative way. The three-year upgrade not only helped spread the cost out, but most important, it enabled the team to develop in a very methodical design implementation with zero outage
