This paper will discuss the importance of critical sessile or surface microbial monitoring in establishing microbial control in chilled water systems. The paper will show that this type of monitoring, including for sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), is essential in confirming that microbial control has been truly achieved. Eliminating biofilms and SRB means true microbial control, and long term results in less overall oxidizer required to maintain that control. Biodispersants may be required to eliminate biofilms. There are ancillary benefits with respect to improved copper and mild steel corrosion inhibition in being able to apply less oxidizer long term.
