IDEA, the international association for district energy, has been operating mainly in the USA and Canada for over 100 years. The district energy sector is expanding rapidly, illustrated by the fact that in 2017 around 52 million square feet of new connections were counted in North America alone. Data provided by the association shows that approximately 900 district energy installations are currently operational in the USA, mainly in the north east, Texas, California and the Upper Midwest. District energy is preferred by many university campuses in order to achieve economies of scale, and in these facilities cogeneration seems to be the ideal technology to combine with this system.
