Renewable liquid biofuels such as Renewable Fuel Oil and Bio-residual Oil can be burned in existing boilers while utilizing most of the existing equipment on site. While keeping initial capital expenditure relatively low compared to other renewable fuel options, the challenges and benefits associated with burning and handling liquid biofuels will be discussed. In addition, the available liquid biofuels on the market will be compared to each other in terms of challenges and benefits. Case studies for different biofuels will be presented to showcase how real-world challenges associated with handling and burning biofuels can be overcome to provide a central heating plant a cost effective renewable option.
