Economics of District Energy for HVAC in Multi-Family Housing

10-11-2017 13:45

Summary

Are district energy systems a good choice for multi-family housing or not? Spoiler alert: yes (but not always). After engaging developers on this very question, Veolia commissioned a third-party investigation of representative buildings in six US cities. Six common HVAC system concepts were applied to three hypothetical buildings representing contemporary best-practice using full-year energy modeling tools for each of the cities. Results were merged with detailed projections for initial cost, maintenance, escalation, and replacement costs. The resulting 20 year life cycle cost projections provide a valuable tool for use in steering conversations toward the real value of district energy.
