Europe: Building the Bridge to the Future

10-24-2017 10:24

Summary

The European energy ecosystem is currently undergoing massive transformation.

The European Union is taking a leadership role in decarbonizing its power sector. This requires deploying significant volumes of renewable power generation, which has implications for the entire energy ecosystem. The whole European power generation system must become more flexible and efficient, otherwise the integration costs of variable renewables will be very high. GE believes that an important facilitator of the energy system change in Europe is improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the existing fleet of fossil-fueled power plants.

Power digitization is now reaching into every corner of our lives, including the European energy market. It also creates unprecedented opportunities for the energy industry: It has the potential to radically alter the way electricity is produced, distributed and consumed. Digitally-enhanced power generation, combined with advanced hardware, will deliver greater affordability, reliability and sustainability.
