Microgrids offer a number of interesting and valuable capabilities along with challenging engineering questions: -Voltage and frequency stability: Does the microgrid include the correct mix of real and reactive power sources and sinks? How fast must non-critical loads be shed to maintain stability during unintentional islanding? -Protective relaying performance: How fast must faults be cleared from the islanded microgrid to prevent microgrid collapse? -Ground source arrangement: Where are the microgrid ground sources and how do they impact performance? -Arc flash hazards: How are they different in islanded operation and what can be done to mitigate increased flash hazards? This presentation describes tools, solutions, and lessons learned.
