Session Abstract

Blatchford will be home to 30,000 residents living in a sustainable community that uses 100% renewable energy.

The heat pump as specified was required to provide maximum 1070 KW or 4 Giga Joules of heat based on a Geothermal Flow rate of 780 us gpm or seasonal Cooling of 3120 MBH of Cooling at Full Capacity. The Heat Pump is reversible that it provides Building Cooling in Summer and Heating in Winter.

4.2MW district heating/cooling heat pump

Capacity expansion to existing system that currently uses gas fired boilers and freon chillers to meet heating/cooling demands. The solutions provided not only eliminates the need for fossil fuels but also uses a zero GWP refrigerant.

Presentation will review the capacities (KW, temperatures and flow rates) and compare total cost of ownership analysis vs business as usual scenario.

Project challenges include

system cop vs capital cost

project timeline

equipment footprint and enclosure details

Code and regulatory requirements

The role of carbon tax projections in Canada will also be discussed and how they impacted the financial analysis.
