Summary

DATE: Wednesday, November 30, 2016

TIME: 1:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (New York, GMT-05:00)

DESCRIPTION  Ever since the first Montreal Protocol meetings began regulating CFCs in the 1980s, refrigerant rules and acceptability continue to evolve. Since then, there has been an increased focus and accelerated timing on regulations for all fluids that are being used today in the HVAC industry.

Now, the latest Montreal Protocol agreement signed October 16th 2016 focuses on phase-down of HFCs. This persistent churn generates confusion- what's in, what's out, and what's coming? At the same time, the market has been demanding equipment, design strategies and control methods that result in the highest levels of efficiency- will the new fluids hinder or enhance that efficiency?

The speakers, Ryan Geister and Mike Thompson describe the next-generation of fluids, which represent new challenges for providing the highest performing HVAC equipment; besides efficiency they may also challenge the industry's expectations for safety and flammability. This presentation separates fact from fiction, and discusses why, when, and how the industry will face the coming refrigerant transitions.

Speakers

Ryan Geister is the Applied Systems Leader for Trane, a brand of Ingersoll-Rand. During his 20 year tenure, Ryan has held various roles supporting the Trane portfolio of chillers with increasing responsibilities.
As the Applied Systems leader, he is focused on advancing a strategy to drive system solutions for customers. This includes developing tools and improving the effectiveness of the Trane selling organization by expanding systems knowledge and capabilities to influence consulting engineers and technical decision makers. Ryan serves on the Ingersoll Rand Refrigerant Strategy Committee. He has led and continues to support the Global Product Network for Trane chiller portfolios.
Currently, Ryan is the chairman of the AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute) Chiller Section Committee and a member of the AHRI Board of Directors. He is an ASHRAE Journal author and has spoken at annual meetings during his 20 years as an ASHRAE member. Ryan holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

Mike Thompson is Global Leader of Refrigerant Strategy for the Ingersoll Rand businesses of Trane, and Thermo King.  Mike has worked for Ingersoll Rand in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry for over 25 years.  In this role, Mike is responsible for developing and communicating Ingersoll Rand's environmental message to the industry, and working with the sales distribution organization globally to educate customers on the importance of environmental issues when selecting HVAC and refrigeration systems. Mike also works with Trane's leadership and technology groups to help navigate the complexity of global refrigerant regulations now, and in the future.

He's held numerous positions with Trane including Field Sales and Global Marketing manager for Trane's large tonnage chillers, and Director of Environmental Affairs for Trane.  Mike represents Ingersoll Rand at the United Nations Montreal Protocol meetings, and works with governments around the world to help facilitate a smooth transition to next generation refrigerant solutions for air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Mike earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University in mechanical engineering.
