Revolutionizing Campus Energy Plants with Waste Heat Recovery and Microgrids: The Future Is Proven

08-16-2023 11:20

Session Abstract

Since 1986, University of Idaho has generated steam with 100% renewable biomass fuel, derived from urban waste grindings and local sawmill residuals. This presentation will review the challenges, successes, and lessons learned in the multi-year design-build development that ultimately delivered this first of its kind, innovative waste heat-to-power project that provides 15% of campus demand, wrapped in a microgrid for resilient district energy. The presenters will also review the university's vision for its energy future, and how this project seeds those plans. Ultimately, this presentation will provide the Campus Energy audience with an alternate perspective on how to optimize existing infrastructure available in district energy systems.
