Summary
One of the rapidly emerging market opportunities for energy storage is microgrids. This is particularly the case with islands in the multi-megawatt range, which already face high fossil generation costs. This is also true in congested urban locations, where weak grid infrastructure and unplanned load growth can significantly impact the quality and reliability of the power supply. Transitioning to renewables-based power is a feasible solution for both cases. This presentation will review microgrid systems in both island and mainland environments, with an emphasis on how energy storage with intelligent control software can provide multiple benefits when paired with renewables.
