This presentation will provide a case study of The George Washington University urban district energy system located in downtown Washington, D.C. The district energy system consists of a combined heat and power plant, solar thermal heating, and photovoltaic generation. We will present project data showing historical operational characteristics (power generation, steam production, seasonal variations) of the campus district energy system. In a new U.S. Department of Energy-funded project, we will evaluate the integration of on-campus photovoltaics and thermal and battery storage and highlight ways to improve efficiency, reliability and resiliency.
