Utilizing Energy Performance Contracting as a Campus De-Carbonization Tool

08-16-2023 10:34

Session Abstract

The University of Illinois's Utility & Energy Services’ sustainability initiatives have helped the campus meet the goals outlined in the Illinois Climate Action Plan, the University's plan for reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. Thanks to these initiatives, the University exceeded its 2020 iCAP goal of reducing energy use by 30% from 2008, having achieved a reduction of 42% by FY20. A key initiative in this process is Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) - a project delivery method focusing primarily on energy/utility reduction, provided by an ESCO. The University has used this model to manage complex facilities with high energy use, such as laboratories, making them energy efficient and addressing deferred maintenance issues along the way.
