The primary heat source for a district energy network has a significant impact on the design of district energy systems from hydraulic sizing of pipes to substation specification. In this way the selection of a primary heat supply can have a significant indirect impact on project finances. Waste heat sources both from waste to energy facilities and excess heat from industry can pose very different barriers and opportunities for district heating networks.
