Wesleyan University's Logical Progression Toward Carbon Neutrality

09-13-2023 11:20

Session Abstract

Wesleyan University embarked on a carbon neutrality master planning effort in 2018 which resulted in recommendations replace their aging steam distribution system with a low temperature hot water system to reduce standby losses and provide better utilization of waste heat from the campus cogen system, followed by replacement of the of the steam boilers with ground source heat pumps and condensing gas boilers for back up purposes. In parallel with the campus infrastructure upgrades, building energy conservation/hot water conversion projects will be undertaken. The project was justified based on positive economic performance and is being implemented in a phased approach, with nearly half the buildings now connected to the new HW system.
