Western University’s New Vision of District Energy to Mitigate Climate Change

Session Abstract

Western University has implemented energy efficiency measures that have profoundly changed the district energy system: an optimization of the chiller plant reduced peak demand by 1,000 kW and included changing operational procedures for chilled water across campus. Buildings are being retrofitted to incorporate low temperature heating using heat recovery. A heat recovery unit was installed in the steam plant and the energy recovered will be shared across campus using the chilled water network, effectively repurposing it as an energy loop. This innovative approach of repurposing existing infrastructure unlocks opportunities to increase energy efficiency, save on utility costs, defer capital investment, and meaningfully reduce GHG emissions.
