Summary

Getting to a 100% renewable-energy future is possible.

Fossil fuel subsidies conceal the reality of the situation — while renewables are not necessarily always reliable, they are cheaper than fossil fuels are can work together to form a reliable synergy in the grid, ensuring that there is always enough power.

Constructing microgrids and using distributed grid systems will further ensure that the future energy mix is stable and reliable, encouraging renewables, bringing down costs, and providing backup systems where necessary.

But getting to this point will not be quick. It will take some years — probably a couple of decades — before renewable energy sources can power our planet. Among these sources will be nuclear fusion power, not to be confused with nuclear fission, which is one of the bridge fuels that we will need to deploy in order to transition to a greener future.

These bridge fuels are not intended to be long-lasting. They are not even necessarily intended to be green. They are simply intended to wean our societies away from fossil fuels in the short-term, before handing the baton to renewable energy sources, which will form the whole of our energy mix well into the future.
