One of Greater Cincinnati's largest universities is taking exploratory steps toward a climate initiative that may soon prompt development of an on-campus solar field.
In late January, Miami University issued a request for bids from qualified firms to conduct a $20,000 solar energy generation study. Upon its completion — and assuming the timing is favorable — Miami plans to quickly engineer a shovel-ready solar field project at either its Oxford or Hamilton campus.
"We’ve evaluated solar many times over the last 10 or 15 years, and it hasn't made sense for us just yet," said Cody Powell, associate vice president of facilities planning and operations. "As it stands now, we know there's going to be a time in the not-too-distant future where it likely is going to make sense."
The university is considering several sites for the proposed solar field, including locations near Freyman Field, the Ditmer Parking Lot and DeWitt Cabin greenspace at its Oxford main campus, as well as brownfield land at its Hamilton regional campus. The goal is to tie solar production directly into the campus power grid.
