University of Central Florida continues progress toward sustainability goals

In the last 13 years, UCF has worked to improve its sustainability with goals to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, have a "zero waste" campus and integrate sustainability into its core focus, according to the Sustainability Initiatives website.

Now, according to the UCF 2020-30 Campus Master Plan, the campus is continuing this journey, which details many policies and moves UCF plans to make to continue acting sustainably.

The plan includes policies that establish the possibility of a new recycling center to increase efficiency of recycling on campus and to help the campus accomplish more of its own recycling.

According to the master plan, UCF will assess and replace pressure-reducing valves in reclaimed water distribution with pressure-reducing turbines. These turbines can generate power and provide more renewable energy for campus.

When it comes to reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption, “energy efficiency is what you should always do,” said James Fenton, a materials science and engineering professor.
