CU Bolder - Regent-approved energy plant upgrades represent bridge to carbon neutrality

Summary

As part of the consent agenda at its regular meeting held at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs this week, the University of Colorado Board of Regents approved a $43.1 million plan to replace heating and power generating equipment in the West District Energy Plant located on the Boulder campus, a key milestone on CU Boulder’s path to carbon neutrality

WDEP is what is known as a combined heat and power (CHP) plant system, which operates more efficiently than buying electricity from the grid and generating on-site heating separately. Generating power on campus with a CHP approach is currently cleaner than buying power from the grid. 

Ewing said that this project serves as a bridge to allow time to plan, invest and execute the campus’s strategy for achieving carbon neutrality, and that investing in these improvements is the right action for campus to take at this time with respect to our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship
