Please Join with IDEA and Sign the Global Cooling Pledge

By District Energy posted 11-09-2023 15:10

As you may know, through our involvement as a partner organization in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Cool Coalition, the International District Energy Association (IDEA) has been invited to sign on to the Global Cooling Pledge (click link above to read current draft) which will be presented at COP 28 in Dubai on December 5, 2023.

Among other objectives, the Global Cooling Pledge has a goal to “raise ambition and international cooperation through collective targets on improving efficiency and climate-friendly approaches, while increasing access to sustainable cooling” through action and education.

On behalf of the COP 28 presidency and Cool Coalition, IDEA member organizations (private and public) are also hereby invited to sign on to the Global Cooling Pledge. IDEA is collating member responses to be forwarded to the Cool Coalition in advance of COP28.

If possible, please indicate your interest in signing on to the Global Cooling Pledge, by or before 5 pm ET (Boston) Thursday, November 16, 2023.

Yes, Sign Me On

On a related note, in coordination with UNEP, and with the primary support of host organization Empower Energy Solutions of Dubai, IDEA is organizing a summit on district cooling at COP28.

At the summit, industry executives from Empower, Enwave and CenTrio, among other international organizations, will discuss how district energy can be an efficient, reliable source of low-carbon cooling for cities, campuses and communities, especially in warmer climates and emerging economies where urban heat islands and densification are driving demands for air conditioning upward.

By aggregating and connecting the cooling needs of many buildings, district cooling systems facilitate deployment of more efficient and environmentally-sustainable solutions like renewable deep-lake water cooling, combined heat and power, thermal energy storage and industrial heat pumps.

There is growing urgency to accelerate climate solutions at a collective scale. District energy systems are a proven approach to optimize and adapt local energy solutions while addressing global challenges.

If there is another person in your organization better situated to authorize the “sign-on”, please forward this email. If you have any questions, please contact Jason Beal at jason.idea@districtenergy.org or by phone at 508-366-9339.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation.

Sincerely,

Rob Thornton
