Summary

Iowa State University is getting a major funding boost that will help them build the state's first microgrid system in Montezuma.

Right now, they are working on designs for a solar & battery power system. In February, U.S. Energy Secretary, Jennifer Granholm, announced that Iowa State University is receiving nearly $9.5 million to build that system. That investment also came with a $2.4 million from local cost shares.

Iowa's News Now spoke with Jennifer Granholm, the U.S. Energy Secretary, to talk about the microgrid system.

"The City of Montezuma, obviously it's 1,400 residents, and they have a reliance," said Granholm. "About 53% of their reliance is on fossil fuels. They've got an aging infrastructure."
That project is part of an effort made by the Biden-Harris Administration to support rural areas in America. The microgrid system is designed to replace some of the aging electrical infrastructure in the area.
