Evolving from Standby Diesel Generators to Microgrids

Summary

Colleges, universities and military installations often include multiple standby diesel gensets (SDGs) that provide building-specific backup power when the main utility feeds to the campus fail. These assets are very expensive to install, operate and maintain, yet their primary benefits are infrequently realized. Further, when called upon, they are typically inefficient and prone to failure.

This presentation includes case studies of two locations (Santa Clara University, Ft. Bragg) where microgrid projects are being developed that provide for a more financially and technically compelling deployment. In each case the SDGs are coupled with combined heat and power (CHP, or cogeneration) district energy plants.
